Unreleased/Cancelled Virtual Boy Games

In my last few articles I’ve talked about if the Virtual Boy is as bad as people say, Virtual Boy games worth playing, and the Japanese Virtual Boy games. But now, for the last Virtual View article, I’ll be talking about the unreleased/cancelled games that were planned to be on the Virtual Boy. 33 games were confirmed but never released for the Virtual Boy. While their isn’t information about all 33, I’ll be informing you about the games that have information about them.

Homebrew Virtual Boy Games

Although the Virtual Boy may have lasted 8 months, dying in March of 1996, dedicated fans of the red beast have been making a variety of homebrew games and presenting their games to other Virtual Boy fans on Planet Virtual Boy, the site where you can either purchase or download the recently released and fully completed Virtual Boy version of Faceball. I’m not going to be looking at all of the homebrew games, since there are tons of them (24 of them are already finished or nearly finished), but rather I’ll look at select eight games.

Japanese Exclusive Virtual Boy Games

The Virtual Boy’s short life brought us, or at least people in North America, a total of 14 games. Three of which were exclusive to the region: 3D Tetris, Nester’s Funky Bowling, and Waterworld. In the land of the rising sun, they had 19 of the 22 games released for the system, with 8 exclusives. The purpose of this articles is to show them off to see if they’re worth playing either by emulation, or by buying an actual cartridge.

I should also mention, due to the difficulty of capturing footage of Virtual Boy gameplay, some videos will be of low quality. Virtual Boy games are actually very crisp and easy to see (before possible eye strain/headache) if you play them on the actual console.

Teleroboxer Review

Behold the Virtual Boy’s only fighting game. Think of Mike Tyson’s Punch-out!! but in first person view and with robots. Also this was one of two Virtual Boy games I got as a Xmas gift along with the well praised Virtual Boy Wario Land.

Red Alarm Review

This was the second game of the three that came with my Virtual Boy and I wasn’t expecting anything good from this game after watching AVGN’s review and looking at the games rating on some video game websites. However, after playing it, I was surprised that I enjoyed it. Let’s dive into Red Alarm, the Virtual Boy’s 3D shooter.

Mario’s Tennis Review

When I got my Virtual Boy for Xmas, I could finally get down to creating some reviews relating to the console, the first of which will be a review of the VB’s pack-in title, Mario’s Tennis. When the red machine came in the mail, one of the games it came with was Mario’s Tennis which would become the first entry in the Mario Tennis series which still continues today with Mario Tennis Open on the 3DS, which came out back in May of 2012.

Although the Virtual Boy may be hated by many gamers, it’s really only the hardware they hate. The games the Virtual Boy has are actually great and deserve to be played by more people. You don’t even have to own the system to play the games, since emulation is available. I asked Planet Virtual Boy to help me with this blog and I was able to make a list from their community’s suggestions of 10 games worth playing.

Is the Virtual Boy Really that Bad?

The Angry Video Game Nerd. I discovered his videos back in 2006, and have been watching his work since. Although I don’t find his more recent videos to be as memorable as his older ones, one of my favorite videos of his is the Virtual Boy review. After watching it back in November, I decided to get the red machine just to see if it was really as bad as James and most other gamers say it is.
