We’ve had a lot of fun here, folks. At least, I know I did. However, the sun is setting, and the ship is coming into dock. It pains me to say it, but this is the last ever edition of On Her Majesty’s Sega Mega Drive, and I have no plans to revive the series. It’s been an amazing three months, and I can honestly say this is the best time I’ve ever had writing for a site ever. You know what I hate? Good-byes.

I wasn’t among the first contributors to 1 More Castle, nor was I the last. (I was possibly the most inconsistent though ;) I have however, been here, watching, from the very beginning. 1 More Castle launched around the time when I was still headfirst in the retro gaming scene but had moved away from hosting my written and video content on my own website (cost and time overhead was too much). Sometime after the initial creation of 1 More Castle, Eric Bailey put out another call for contributors so I pitched him several ideas. He immediately liked my idea of a somewhat tongue-in-cheek column that focused on the annoying and negative aspects of retro games. And thus, RetroHate was born.

In its own words, 1 More Castle describes itself as a “retro gaming destination,” & a “gaming site,” To me, it is a community, more than it is anything else. When I have excitedly explored the content on 1 More Castle, it hasn’t been because I am raising a gamer, or because my life won’t be complete until I know what the eff IS on that disc. This is of course not because the content isn’t inherently good, I mean obviously it’s great content (you’ve read some, right?), but because of the real sense of family & goodwill on this site, which has always been my motivation for visiting the Castle. I made a point of following most of the contributors (& some of the readers!) on twitter from the start, & that habit has made 1 More Castle so much more than just a site to me. I read the articles, I become fond of the people… & so I read more articles, & the cycle is enriched.

Cast your mind back to one of the first reviews I did here on On Her Majesty’s Sega Mega Drive: Donald in Maui Mallard. Yeah, it was a relatively decent platformer with vaguely racist undertones and an odd jumping mechanic, but it didn’t seem to leave a lasting impression on most. Most, that is, except for Looney Tunes, who decided that “anything they can do, we can do better, as long as we do it 20 years ago because our stuff isn’t so great now”. Strong words. In response, as if to say “Pah!” to Donald’s pathetic little excursion to Maui, Looney Tunes kicked it up to 11. They sent Daffy Duck to Hollywood.

I’ll admit that my experience with pinball machines is incredibly lacking; the only substantial time I’ve ever spent with pinball is with 3D Space Cadet Pinball on Windows XP, which is hardly the real thing but is nevertheless a game I will always fondly remember. So, you can imagine how I jumped at the chance to take a look at another pinball title, this time released for the Mega Drive. Coming to us from Codemasters is Psycho Pinball, and if there’s ever two things that go hand in hand, it’s mental illness and pinball, right? Nevertheless, I ventured forth to see what this title had to offer.

The end is bittersweet, especially when it’s something you love, but alas, there is no escaping the eventual conclusion to all things. If you look at the humble beginnings of video games however, you may notice an interesting tendency. In the early days, most, if not all games had no predefined ending. Other than the “game over” screen, the player would generally spend their time chasing a high score in a loop ad infinitum. You could argue that a game over screen is an ending in of itself, but have a computer play Pong “perfectly” and the game could technically go on until our sun goes supernova. Pong, or Space Invaders, or Spacewar, or pretty much every game pre 1980 were not designed to be “beaten,” but simply played, products of limited resources in an antiquated era.

I can still remember the first time I played Metroid. It was within the first year of its release, so I was, at most, seven years old. I might’ve played it for about 10 minutes before deciding it was a terrible game and playing something else. My aunt’s step-son owned it, so when I would visit over the years, I would repeat this process. Get the Morph Ball, not know know that I got the Morph Ball, not know what the hell the Morph Ball does, accidentally morph into a ball, leave that accursed corner of the game, reach a red door, rip game from NES, throw it across the room, put better game in NES. As an adult, my opinion of this game has only slightly improved.

Which game should definitely not be remade next?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock or took a spontaneous 11 day Twitter hiatus, you have probably heard of Square Enix’s announcement of the long requested FF7 remake and my personal excitement for the news. Alas, days have passed and while people are trying to find multiple ways to ensure NO ONE gets their hopes up, I moved on to more pressing matters. In case you haven’t noticed, some people are facing their worst crisis in more than 15 years. Many amateur Youtubers and writers have lost their fetish game that “should not be remade” (and other results). Sure, Shenmue 3 and Fallout 4 were announced, but Half-Life 3 remains the running gag for unreleased sequels. As for “doesn’t deserve a remake” territory, the land is barren.

The beautiful game is ubiquitous in the UK, and even more so when it comes to video games. The last instalment of Fifa sold 800,000 copies for PS4 in the UK alone – compare that to 551k in the USA; the gap only get bigger across all consoles, because frankly, at this stage, Fifa‘s been on more platforms than Mario, Crash and Spyro combined. However, it’s not just the aspect of playing football that interests people – football management has captured gamers’ imagination for well over twenty years. To go back to the stats again, Football Manager 2015 has done 180k units in the UK, while the numbers are so low in the US that they’ve failed to even appear on the radar. The popularity of these games resounds in the UK like fans cheering at Wembley Stadium, which brings us onto today’s game: Premier Manager, which was only ever released in Europe, specifically aiming at a British audience. The question today: is this managerial sim like a shot in the back of the net, or is it offside?

Asterix and the Power of the Gods Review

This week’s edition of On Her Majesty’s Sega Mega Drive is an oddity. As we know by now, this series covers Mega Drive games that never made it into America, but saw an audience in the UK. Usually, the reason for this is that the game in question based on a franchise that’s madly popular in Britain, but non-existent in America. Yet, today, we have this: Asterix and the Power of the Gods, developed by Core Design shortly before they hit the big time with Tomb Raider. Asterix, while not unheard of, is a definite French comic book icon (much like Tintin), making a UK release a slightly odd choice –a bit like releasing a Beano game in continental Europe.

Whatever you talk about, it just seems to reply nonsense and never leave you alone no matter how many times you ask. Every time you’re on a computer, it jumps at you making your online experience terrible. It pisses on everything you love and hold dear, it shits in front of your face then acts like a victim. It knocks down all your achievements and you have a strange suspicion that it wants to genuinely hurt you sometimes. In fact, you often wonder how many of them are roaming in your neighborhood, ready to jump at you. In the end, though, you really pity the poor creatures and their seemingly senseless behaviors. So, what is it?

In 1994, Ocean Software came up with the bright idea of creating a mascot for the Sega Mega Drive. A genius idea; loads of kids loved the console, and it’s always a good idea to hook them into the business early. So, they set upon coming up with a cute and cuddly fellow with just a little bit of attitude, one that had cool trainers (‘sneakers’ in American English) and could run as fast as the wind. Truly an inspir– wait, this is all very familiar, isn’t it? Hot off the booming popularity of Sonic in Europe (some might call it a Sonic boom), Ocean created their own European-only counterpart: Mr Nutz.
