Retro Power: Goodbye, 1 More Castle

In its own words, 1 More Castle describes itself as a “retro gaming destination,” & a “gaming site,” To me, it is a community, more than it is anything else. When I have excitedly explored the content on 1 More Castle, it hasn’t been because I am raising a gamer, or because my life won’t be complete until I know what the eff IS on that disc. This is of course not because the content isn’t inherently good, I mean obviously it’s great content (you’ve read some, right?), but because of the real sense of family & goodwill on this site, which has always been my motivation for visiting the Castle. I made a point of following most of the contributors (& some of the readers!) on twitter from the start, & that habit has made 1 More Castle so much more than just a site to me. I read the articles, I become fond of the people… & so I read more articles, & the cycle is enriched.

GREETINGS READERS! We just got back from the second annual Indy Pop Con. Ok, that is a bit of a fib, it took place on the last weekend in June. We did however attend the con, and had a blast. Both of us attended the inaugural Pop Con last year, and were excited to attend as members of the press this year. Greetings once again, true believers. This month we’re writing to you from the far side of the galaxy, somewhere close to the Delta Quadrant. There may have been some interference with our communications, and as such we have not received any reader submitted answers to our question of the month. We realize that the process for submitting answers has been a bit cumbersome in the past, and that is changing. From here on out we will be using a Google Form to take answers. What this means for you is that you may now submit an answer more quickly. The link to the form will be at the end of the article, and we’ll be tweeting it out periodically. Of course it’s still ok to email in your answers, or to leave them in the comment section. We’d really like to keep this a community-oriented project, and cannot do that without you.

Retro Power Project Announcement

I’d be lying if I told you that my college writing classes were my favorite, but since graduation I have slowly come to not only tolerate putting ink to paper, but actually quite enjoy it. There was something almost inexplicably cathartic about my Indy Pop Con article. I knew after its warm reception I had to do something else to add to the retro gaming community, but what else was there?

After exchanging emails with my now partner in crime the thought struck me, “I love Nintendo Power.” I mean who among us in the community doesn’t shed a tear now and then at its absence, but my sentiment wasn’t just about missing the beloved magazine itself, but more so the gaping hole it has left in our community since its disappearance.
