Bitter Without Continues

How to be a winner. Even when you’re a loser.

Let me give you some insight on how to impress the hell out of your peers based on personal experience. It is NOT achieved by spending three and a half years of replaying the same video game over and over and freaking over again in a vain attempt at going for a world record. (That is, unless these are people who REALLY, REALLY enjoy games, possibly at some kind of insane sociopathic level above standard casual gamer fare.)

Today, I want to talk about the experience of how to get recognition for something that very few people will ever care about.

This is a happy story. Of the time that I kicked the motherloving ass out of Gradius, and how it has become an incredibly moot point in the development of my own personal character.

Atari Poop – Enduro

I normally hate racing games. I usually find them boring, unless you can play them while not technically racing (like Carmageddon); however, Enduro is unique not only among racing games, but also within the history of video games in general. The person behind Enduro decided that his time-traveling exploits shouldn’t be wasted on making a game that incorporates elements from a bunch of his favourite movies. Enduro is the product of time-travel, a dystopian future, propaganda, and an intense hatred of the European Union.

The Completist

The Completist Presents: The Revenge of Shinobi

All was dark and serene in my world, I must have been sleeping. In the back of my head I felt a nagging sensation pulling at my consciousness.  Threatening to bring me out of the inner peace I was enjoying. I began to hear an interesting groove, a nice beat. Bop Bop thrum de dum dum, bah! I slowly opened my eyes, staring at the perfectly flat ceiling of my grandmothers 1950’s era Florida home. I heard the rustle of Coconut Palms gently blowing in the ocean breeze outside. That same breeze softly caressing my face through the slotted “island style” windows of this antique house. It was time to wake up.

Right to Censor

N64 Connoisseur

Censored

While doing some research for a recent review of Cruis’n USA, I came across something that I hadn’t noticed at the time but as soon as I read it, I knew it to be true. You see, Cruis’n USA was an arcade port to the N64 and during the porting process, the game was censored. The arcade version let you hit and destroy animals, which in the arcade style of the game was hilarious. The animals were removed entirely from the N64 game. That lead me to wonder what other N64 games felt the cold hand of the Nintendo censors. Here are a few notable instances.

Sleuth: DOS

So you have an urge to be a detective, but you don’t want to muck around with that whole licensing thing. Forget watching people for hours on end. Getting shot at? Yeah, I’d skip that too. I invite you then, to discover Sleuth for DOS based computers.

The Retro Critic

Street Racer

You know what?

I don’t think I’ve actually ever reviewed a retro racing game for 1MoreCastle thusfar, which is weird because it’s not like I never played any! I always had a few racing games lying around for every console I owned back in the day and a lot of them I still remember having a ball playing.

Hell, I even recall playing OutRun in the Arcade and loving it!

Weirdly, one of the first racing games that comes to my mind when thinking back to some I played and enjoyed during my childhood is Street Racer for the Sega Genesis.

Originally released for the SNES, it took the go-karting formula of Mario Kart and did its own thing with it, giving you a decent choice of goofy characters, each with their own unique vehicle, and allowing you to bomb and attack your opponents during the races themselves.

Bad Guys Anonymous

Octorok

Welcome to yet another edition of Bad Guys Anonymous, where we single out the first villains we all so easily murdered in video games of yore. These are the opponents we stomp, slice or blast and forget.

Much like we did when we settled on Met as the first baddy in Mega Man, we had to use logic to pick the first anonymous villain in The Legend of Zelda. As the game opens up, players can go in one of three directions (aside from entering the cave). You can go left, right or up. Two of those directions bit you against a pack of Octoroks, while the third sets you near the annoying Tektites.

Ugh, the Tektite. With their seemingly random jumps, these guys are one of the most annoying villains in classic gaming history, as far as I’m concerned. But, alas, that’s not why we’re here today.

Bitter Without Continues

No, thank you.

So we should talk about this thing. And guess what? I’m probably in the same boat as you.

Why the fuck do i want something in my house that has a camera that i can’t turn off?

No, seriously? SERIOUSLY. This is the first time in history that all big name developers are producing hardware that i just don’t give a shit about.

With the announcement of the Xbox One, i’m getting the promise of something that makes it easy to instantaneously switch from TV, to movie, back to game, ALL with the power of voice?

Guess what? I have that. It’s an INPUT BUTTON ON MY FUCKING REMOTE. SPEECH and WAVING is again, more involved than something already pre-established by the convenience of a single button press on a piece of plastic and circuits that’s been the status quo for years.

…INNOVATION!

Virtual View

Japanese Exclusive Virtual Boy Games

The Virtual Boy’s short life brought us, or at least people in North America, a total of 14 games. Three of which were exclusive to the region: 3D Tetris, Nester’s Funky Bowling, and Waterworld. In the land of the rising sun, they had 19 of the 22 games released for the system, with 8 exclusives. The purpose of this articles is to show them off to see if they’re worth playing either by emulation, or by buying an actual cartridge.

I should also mention, due to the difficulty of capturing footage of Virtual Boy gameplay, some videos will be of low quality. Virtual Boy games are actually very crisp and easy to see (before possible eye strain/headache) if you play them on the actual console.

A few thoughts on the Virtual Console (Pt. 1)

The Virtual Console, Nintendo’s Online shop for downloadable content, has been around since the launch of the Wii in 2006. Perhaps most notably though, the Virtual Console has been used as a platform to launch older games to a modern audience. I’m just not entirely sure Nintendo is doing it correctly.

Star Trek: The Simon and Schuster Text Adventures

As I type this, Star Trek Into Darkness is still pretty fresh in my mind. It was a good movie, don’t get me wrong, but the fan-boy in me is pretty aggravated for a few reasons, which I won’t get into. The past few weeks here on 1 MC have seen a multitude of Star Trek games covered, from the unreleased Star Trek V for the NES, the Next Generation game, and back again to an early 80’s arcade release. I noticed a gaping hole in all this coverage. What if I told you there was not just one, but TWO excellent, extremely difficult text adventures based in the Star Trek universe?
