Night of the Living MoonWalker

*Authors Note*

With the recent release of “Xscape”, I felt the need to go back. Way back. To Michael Jackson in his prime. Love him or hate him, he is an icon like no other. A tortured and flawed soul to be sure, but a musical genius as well. That genius has had an indescribable influence on my life and I want to share it with everyone. There will be no hate here. Hating is too easy and every fool has done their fair share of that (myself included). I’d rather celebrate love, great music and a totally wacky video game. If it weren’t for MJ, it is doubtful I would have the love of music that I experience today. And on that note, there is only one Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, and there is truly nothing else like it.

Let it Slide

Everyone loves Mega Man. Well, maybe everyone except certain Canadians. ;) [ Editor’s Note: Here, Joshua is referring to Jason Lamb, Canadian, one of our podcast hosts… and notorious hater of legendary platformer. — Bailey. ] But it’s pretty safe to say that Mega Man is a timeless classic for anyone who enjoys platformers or video games in general. Like any video game franchise though, there have been endless debates on which game in the series is the best. Some say Mega Man 2 is the best. Others claim 3 is better. Well I’d like to put my three cents in and say that they are all equal. Equally dumb and inferior to Mega Man X.

Why? Two big reasons: The Dash and the Wall Jump.

X-Men 2: Clone Wars

Since an actually good X-Men movie is currently out in cinemas, I thought I’d take a look at an actually good X-Men retro game!

For that, I turned to the good old Sega Genesis for advice and soon found myself re-discovering a really cool X-Men game.

The game is X-Men 2: Clone Wars, the follow-up to the simply titled X-Men. A game which, as much as I enjoyed it back in the day, simply didn’t have the pace and the flow needed to keep you glued to your TV throughout.

Thankfully, this superior sequel sorts all that out.

Top 10 Octopi in Gaming

If you’re a genius like me, you notice patterns in retro video games. I personally noticed that there are a lot of octopusses… octopie… umm… cephalopods… in video games. So that got me thinking, what are the best octolopods in video games? Well I’ll tell you.

1 More Castle Will Now Cover Sixth-Generation Game Systems as Retro

Hello there. Eric Bailey, friendly neighborhood Editor-In-Chief here, with a nifty bit of news that will affect 1MC’s direction moving forward.

I remember attending Midwest Gaming Classic way back in March of 2013 and having a particular conversation with some fellow gamers there. With me was Eric Hunter, our audio engineer for the podcast. Those whom we spoke to were actually surprised at our age. There we were, in our 20s, discussing old video games. “You’re so young!” they said.

Game Overkill: The Announcement

Hi folks,

First of all, I’m not here to announce the triumphant return of Atari Poop. I’m here to ask all of you for some help with my feature here on 1MoreCastle.

After a short Twitter project where people sent me their favourite albums, which I then listened to while sharing my thoughts, I realised that I’d listened to a lot of music I never would have and it was an amazing experience. Almost immediately, I knew I wanted to something similar with video games, but much, much bigger.

Welcome to the first episode of the Retro News Round-Up on 1 More Castle, which takes a quickfire look at all of the May’s retro gaming going ons – including the latest ports and remakes, hardware and accessories, homebrew, fan translations, and a bit more besides.

Masterpiece Microscope

Ninja Gaiden II Eagles

Masterpiece Microscope is a series in which I choose one great video game, then focus intensely on a single specific feature of its gameplay. Upon close examination, we may gain new insight as to just how great the game is, along with a better appreciation for the quality work that went into every little detail.

Quick: When I say “fast-paced NES action game,” what do you think of? Read More

GMZ #15 – Errors and Cons

Ruto Man Hospitalized, Possible Suicide Attempt

The man from the small mountain town of Ruto who was rushed to the Rauru Regional Hospital late last night is conscious and in stable condition. Police have questioned him, as he was discovered unconscious in his home by a neighbour, and have ruled out foul play. The man appears to have been working in his home with a bench and a rope and accidentally hung himself. He explained that it was simply an error.

Running Man

If you’re not jumping, punching or shooting in video games, then chances are, you’re running. Running to beat the arbitrary timer, running to catch the bad guy, running to catch that elusive power-up that’s bouncing out of reach, or just running because GOSH DARN IT! I’M IMPATIENT!! MUST END LEVEL NAO!! Seemingly at odds with this near-constant running, many games, particularly platformers, require very precise movements and jumping. Sometimes you need to be fast to avoid the collapsing cave and other times slow and steady makes it out alive when the floor is lava. Read More

The Adventures Of Gilligan’s Island

Come on, don’t look surprised.

I was BORN to review this!

Now, this might be a controversial review seeing as the common consensus on this game is pretty much that it is terrible and should be stored next to the Ark of the Covenant far away in a big dusty box somewhere. This includes our very own Nintendo Legend who understandably destroyed The Adventures Of Gilligan’s Island (aka Gilligan’s Island) in his review some time ago.

The fact that I kinda like this game in a weird way may possibly make me look insane but also, I think, raises some interesting retro gaming questions: Can a well-meaning game adaptation which captures the spirit of its source material relatively well still be considered a complete failure even if it is extremely flawed? And what should our expectations be when dealing with a TV or film-to-game adaptation so ludicrous in concept that it doesn’t even sound like a real thing that should exist?

1 More Castle’s Top 5 Favorite Video Game Songs

My very first list for 1 More Castle (Top 10 Castles in Video Games) was published on May 14th 2013. I wanted to do something special to honor my one year anniversary at the site. Instead of doing some self-indulgent list about my blogs, or something by myself I wanted to get as many 1 More Castle contributors involved as I could.

So what follows is several lists written by numerous 1 More Castle contributors. We are all going to be counting down our top five favorite retro video game songs.

Thanks for continuing to feature my blogs 1 More Castle and thanks to all the readers. Here’s hoping for another great year.

Famicom vs NES

Afternoon everyone! Figured today I would do something I probably should have done from the get go, I’m going to look at the Famicom system itself and what makes it different than the grey Nintendo Entertainment System we are all familiar with. For today I’m going to focus on some of the differences between the two. Don’t want to bore you so I’ll try to make it more of a condensed version.
