My Two Gils

My Two Gils – Introduction

Ah, 1 More Castle! Finally! Most of you have probably seen me roaming about the site quite frequently, I assume my arrival doesn’t come as much of a surprise. As a gaming enthusiast and hobbyist blogger, I had been thinking of creating a series for this wonderful site, but, despite my creative endeavors, no idea came to mind, until now.

I’ve been analyzing a lot of successful websites, looking for what 1 More Castle might be missing. To be honest, the website is already full of content: The professional reviews of the Retro Critic, Genesis Moss, Alex Weiss, Chris Carboni and Tom Hall, the showcasing of little known games by Joe Walker and Alana Dunitz, the entertainment provided by the podcast, the rants of Joshua Caleb, the Countdowns of Eric Vole, the musings of Dustin Faber and Zack Smith and the incredibly hard-working hands-on journalism team of GMZ (I am probably forgetting someone), what could 1 More Castle possibly lack?

2 Decades Late

Uniracers

The Reader Request series has been a lot of fun. I’ve gotten to see what games have been stuck in your memory all of these years. This week’s request comes from Graeme Ellis. Graeme requested the unicycle racing game Uniracers. Although racing games do seem to be the most common on the list of Super Nintendo games I have reviewed after playing them for the first time 2 decades late, this seemed unique enough to capture my interest. Then I studied up a bit on the lore of the game. It is most interesting.

Film Adaption of Battletoads to be directed by J.J. Abrams

By B. Lee

In order to compete with the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie franchise, started by Michael Bay, Rare has announced a partnership with New Line Cinema, for a new movie based on the Battletoads franchise, with the first film being directed by J.J. Abrams. “We’re really excited for the opportunity to both entertain the audiences with fast paced, amphibian action, and also serve a metaphor on the difference between skin conditions,” said New Line Cinema representative, Doug Duglassen, “we are promising ten times more explosions, and half the depth as our competitor.” Rare executives are, “hoping to use the money from this film to buy [themselves] out of Microsoft’s bondage”.

The Flintstones

Oh sure, with the World Cup going on I could have easily reviewed a football game.

I did play a whole bunch of those back in the day, after all.

Then I thought: nah, I’ll give the people what they REALLY want.

Flintstones.

Meet the Flintstones.

They’re the modern stone age family… and also a surprisingly decent Sega Genesis game!

We’re Going on a Pixel Hunt…

You know that phrase “Like looking for a needle in a haystack”? It implies that you’re looking for something very small in a very large area that is filled with lots of similar looking objects to the one you’re trying to find. In video games, particularly old Point and Click adventure games, this is known as “Pixel Hunting.” And it’s frellin’ annoying.

1 More Countdown

Top 10 Beach Levels

As you’re reading this, I’m relaxing on the beaches of Florida, and I’m probably being eaten alive by Floridian zombies high on bath salts. So… if I don’t survive, this might be my last 1 More Countdown. Let’s end this series on something I adore, beach levels in video games. (Unless, I am not eaten alive… then I’ll see you all in a fortnight.)

GMZ – E3 2014 Special Edition

I would like to issue a formal apology for the lateness of this issue of GMZ. It is solely my fault, and I will take responsibility for it, as such. The issue was supposed to be posted Thursday. Wednesday, I entered the hospital with severe testicle pain. The doctor said my balls were just too big. Grossly massive. In his medical opinion, they were “fucking impressive.” I could hardly walk, and I had to stay in the hospital till about 11pm, which didn’t allow me the time I needed to write the articles, as I was away from my phone, computer, or any source of internet.  So, on behalf of myself, and my oversized nuts, I apologize for the tardiness of this issue.

N64 Review #12 – Bass Hunter 64

I have to admit, if you asked me to make a list of real life things I consider to be a good time, fishing is not on the list. So when it comes to video games, fishing video games are about as exciting to me as an all rice cake diet. Nonetheless, I made an oath to review the entire North American N64 library and so it is. Part of what I wanted to accomplish when I set out on this quest was to find games I would not have even considered playing under other circumstances that would turn out to actually be a good time. This is the first game on that quest that has that chance.

Dynamite Düx

Remember Sonic The Fighters (aka Sonic Championship)?

A Sonic fighting game in which you could fight the likes of Tails, Knuckles and a whole range of characters from the Sonic universe in an arcade setting, Sonic The Fighters was absurd on paper but it really was one of those “let’s give it a go” type of games where the developers clearly just wanted to try it out, not knowing if it would do well or not.

It would be weird if there wasn’t a Sonic fighting game, whether’s this one’s any good or not, let’s put it that way.

One of the characters in the game was Bean The Dynamite, a green duck with a penchant for throwing bombs. He was hardly the best fighter to pick in the game but there was something about him.

Enormous video game collection reaches $50,000 bid in ongoing online auction

When the story broke last night, the Internet was only beginning to become aware of the phenomenon of Michael Thomasson’s video games collection. Consisting of over 11,000 (!) individual items, with over a fourth of them still in brand-new unopened condition, it was certified in 2011 by Guinness World Records as being the largest such collection on the planet, though others have challenged it in recent years.

Tales From Indy Pop Con

What can I say about Indy Pop Con? I’m not sure, but it far exceeded any expectations I had of it, but it really would not have been nearly as memorable if I hadn’t been with my fellow Castle crew. I almost can’t even comprehend how we all came together; it felt like The Avengers, only we didn’t have a Nick Fury recruiting us all. There were so many moments that were just perfect. I’d like to highlight a few of my favorites.
