Blackthorne (SNES)

2 Decades Late

Blackthorne

Uh oh, guess what day it is! Huh? No, it isn’t hump day. It’s Review a Bad Game Day, the day where the internet gathers and reviews a game that they just plain don’t like. For me, that happened to fall on the same day as a 2 Decades Late piece, which for those uninitiated, is where I play a SNES title for the first time and review it. For this one, I can almost hear you typing your rebuttal comments for how I am wrong but here goes. A number of you suggested I play Blackthorne so I did. I did not like it.

Water, Water, Water, Water, Water, Water…

Greetings Retro Ladies and you Classic Gents. This week’s target for the Large Hatetron Cannon was provided by 1 More Castle’s very own Zack Smith, author of The Completist column. The target, as you should have guessed by the title, is water. Yep, this week I’m taking on H20. All of it. Get your goggles, wet suits or submarines ’cause it’s gonna get wet up in here.

Dungeon: Atari 2600

Retro games are great. That’s why we’re all here right? Each of us has our favorite game, genre, character, system, controller, and so on. What happens though, when you’ve played ‘everything’ available on your favorite system? You might just turn to the homebrew scene to see if you can find something new. Last week I did just that. AtariAge.com, among several other vendors, offers new Atari games for each Atari system! (Fun Fact: The 2600 has had new games released each year after it’s release, except in 1993 and 1994.)

Top 10 Unlikely Movie Game Villains

Something a little bit different for today, I take a look at 10 random enemies that appear in retro game adaptations of popular movies and explore just how out-of-place they are in those particular settings.

For some reason, retro games allowed programmers to take a lot of liberties back in the day when making games based on movies. And boy do I thank them for it because otherwise, I’d have nothing to make fun of!

Without further ado, let’s check out my Top 10 Unlikely Movie Game Villains, you’ll notice many of those are games I’ve already reviewed here on 1MoreCastle, with a couple of surprises thrown in.

Quartet: Sega Master System

Whoa. I must be writing this from Bizarro World. Two Sega Master System games in a row? Yes! I’m attempting to branch out of my comfort zone for a bit (which means no NES games for a few weeks, sorry Bailey). This week, I present a game called Quartet that’s part Gauntlet, part Contra, and a whole lot of fun. Released in the arcades in 1986, and a year later in ’87 for the C64 and Sega Master System, the game is best described as a platforming shooter. UK friends, you saw the game for the Amstrad CPC and the ZX Spectrum in ’87 as well.

The Completist Presents: Star Control 2

Hello everyone. This week, I have decided to switch things up a bit. I have invited my brother Dana to write about one of our favourite games of all time. Why am I not doing it myself? Simple, I am not qualified. My brother on the other hand probably knows more about this game than anyone else on earth. The game I am talking about is of course: Star Control 2. Which by the way, was covered very nicely by Paul Potvin in a previous column here at 1 More Castle. The main difference between these articles will be the length and detail. While Paul’s article was a nice “summary” of the game, this article is going to be more of a full length feature. One thing I will be contributing to this piece though is the captioning of the photos and the editing. So if you find some funny slang underneath a picture of some Ur-Quan scum, you’ll know who wrote it.

Stop Whining About the Water Temple

Hello, N64 faithful. I originally had a different plan for this week’s N64 Connoisseur piece, but something has been brought to my attention in the last week. Something near and dear to my heart that I was blissfully unaware of and it needs to be addressed by someone so I guess I will have to be that guy. You see, I have been playing Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D this week and I have been semi-live tweeting it. Eventually, I came to the Water Temple and that is when I learned the deep dark secret you have all been hiding. You guys hate the Water Temple. You fear it. Many of you find it to be the most difficult level in the history of gaming. I am flabbergasted.

Wolverine

Yup, it’s THAT time again:

LJNLJN time!

Eric Vole listed his 10 Favorite LJN Games recently and, with The Wolverine coming out in theatres soon, why not take a look at a game that didn’t make the list but is worthy of mention: Wolverine on the NES.

Top 10 SNES Final Boss Themes

It might be my retro-centric brain, but I just cannot get enough of the 8-bit and 16-bit soundtracks of long ago. Nowadays, video games are scored by entire orchestras but in the good ole days this wasn’t the case. I don’t know about you, but I always found the bleeps and bloops of this era much more charming than anything released today.
