SURROUND

Surround. If you ever had a Nokia cell phone, you automatically had this game in your pocket and most likely played it at least once. If you didn’t have a Nokia, surely you saw one of the Tron movies, right? Hello, light cycles?  In the ’90’s, everyone knew this game as ‘Snake’. The first home version of this was on the Atari VCS, called Surround. Unless you had a Sears Video Arcade, then it was called ‘Chase’. It also had some crazy box art that loosely relates to the game. Surround is better than the version on your old Nokia for a few reasons.

The Goonies II

You knew I’d get to this one eventually.

I mean, how could I pass up the chance to joke about a game sequel to a movie which doesn’t actually have a sequel?

It’s goofy, it’s confusing, it’s NES: it’s perfect.

The Goonies II is a sequel to a Goonies Famicom game and follows Mikey on a ridiculous quest to rescue his friends from the Fratellis and… a mermaid.

Best. Sequel. Ever.

Seriously, why haven’t they made this yet?!

I had to sit through TWO half-baked Lost Boys sequels and The Goonies II doesn’t exist?

Unfair.

Pac-Man Tabletop

Recently when foraging through a local flea market, a box with a familiar logo caught my eye. To my amazement it was a Pac-man Coleco Tableop, boxed and all! Something I have never seen back here in cold old Sweden! Naturally I felt I had to make a video about it, for no other reason than to annoy my Pac-man collecting friend who was at the same flea market and just missed the tabletop by a few seconds. And the price I paid for it will perhaps upset you, so brace yourself before you watch the video and find out.

Who's the Boss?

N64 Connoisseur

Who’s the Boss?

It is time once more for the tribe of the 64 to rise with another visit from the N64 Connoisseur. You might remember last time, when I was encouraging you to quit your incessant whining about the Water Temple, that I mentioned another piece I had planned instead. This is that piece. Games are all too often criticized for their boss battles. If they are too easy, people complain. If they are too hard, people complain. There are those few games though that seem to have the Goldilocks of  boss battles, if you will. Those that are just right. For me those are the ones that whether they are easy or difficult, they are just plain fun. I thought it would be cool this week to reminisce about my favorite boss battles on the N64.

Cliffhanger

Why anyone would go through the trouble of making a Cliffhanger game is beyond me.

I mean, the film’s fine and all but it’s not exactly for kids and its plot doesn’t really lend itself to video games so the fact that they made not just one but several Cliffhanger games is pretty odd to me.

All that said, let’s take a look at some of the different game versions based on Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Mountains-set early 90’s flick.

What The EFF is on this Disk!?

Day Games (PC)

October 28, 1989. I was 9 and about two months into middle school. Every Saturday night I’d watch Star Trek: The Next Generation with my parents. I think Worf had already made his way out of red shirts into the yellow security uniforms. Mega Man 2 was my Nintendo addiction. My family had a Tandy 1000 as the household computer. While I’ve covered a ton of games that I feel deserve a Fair Shake,  I stumbled on this disk recently while cleaning out a closet for paint. Written in my awful penmanship with a dollar store marker I can make out the following:

Rise of the Triad (2013) Review

The original Rise of the Triad was the quirky step-child of the first person genre when it was first released. Featuring complex level designs, advanced multiplayer deathmatch modes, and first person platforming, the game was an amped up, ridiculous version of what Wolfenstein 3D established.

And in many of these ways, the remake by Interceptor Entertainment does not disappoint.

The Completist Presents: Metroid – A Love Letter to Samus Aran

Metroid! Need I say more? Why would I bother writing about a game that has been written about pretty much ad infinitum? Even by myself no less! It’s simple, I once again feel like I have something constructive to add to the conversation about this incredible game. Not only that, but I also feel like 1 More Castle needs an injection of Metroid into its veins. Tom Hall wrote a nice piece about how the N64 needed a Metroid game. And Eric Congdon wrote an interesting piece on the character of Samus herself. But other than that, there isn’t much else on Metroid here. I plan on changing that right now and probably again in the future.

Remastered HD Double Deluxe Director’s Cut Plus

Greetings again retro ladies and classic gents, today I’m going to be doing something a bit different on RetroHate that could possibly become a thing or it might just be a 1-Hit Wonder. In light of the DuckTales Remastered release and its very mixed reception thus far, I decided to tackle the subject of remakes & “HD Collections” and why some seem to hate them. That’s right, I’m going to be hating on other people’s hate: It’s RetroHate-ception.

Toy Commander

Back in the days where the Dreamcast existed and made us Sega fiends very happy, a little game came out that made Toy Story sound positively wimpy.

A little game called: Toy Commander.

I first came upon this game on a short demo which came together with that old Dreamcast magazine and had so much fun with it that, much like a robot, I went out and bought the actual thing. It’s weird to think back to that time and realise that I actually owned not one but two toy-themed video games, the other being Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes.

Toy commander is essentially a collection of mini games, or mini missions if you will, all taking place inside some little kid’s house.

A little kid called Andy.

Star Force: NES

So let’s see. You’ve beaten Life Force and you’re tired of R-Type. You even trudged the hard path through all of Blazing Lazers. What next? Proclaim yourself shooter god? If you want to, go ahead, but you should sit back down and try Star Force for the Nintendo Entertainment System. ‘Star what,’ you say? Oh, that game with the cool box art that actually matches what’s going on in the game? The game that has made me feel old recently?

1. What is Paul’s favorite Hall and Oates song?

2. What game did I pick up locally at a pawn shop?

3. What is this week’s Fair Shake about?
