Playing With Power – Nintendo Fun Club News #6

At the start of 1988, Nintendo had 3 big titles in Mega Man, Contra and Wizards and Warriors all releasing within a few months of this issue coming out.  Once again, the newsletter retains the style and format of the previous 2 issues but the back of the Game Pak Wish List has the first mention of the new magazine that will release later in the year.  Nintendo had to know the time to strike was around this time with such big titles like Metal Gear, Double Dragon, Super Mario Bros 2 and Zelda 2 all releasing by the end of  1988 and both EGM and Gamepro launching within a year, they wanted to get their magazine out first to beat the magazine competition to the market. Gods

This week, I’m not just reviewing a retro game.

I’m reviewing the Gods themselves!

First released on the Amiga, Gods was then ported to various consoles including the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo. The game, developed by The Bitmap Brothers, is a supernatural epic in which a hero (basically Hercules) attempts to retake the citadel of the gods from four baddies. The promise being that, should he succeed, he would be made into a god himself.

On the Genesis, we get a cool Batman & Robin-style suiting-up montage showing just how muscly and tough Mr Hercules is:

Sam and Max Hit the Road

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past two weeks, you have probably heard about the LucasArts games that are now available on GOG. While X-Wing and Tie Fighter may have captured the attention of many retro gamers, I was immediately drawn to some of the other LucasArts titles that were re-released. Sam and Max Hit the Road and Monkey Island were two of my earliest gaming experiences. Considering how popular Pajama Sam was with Mae, I thought either of these adventure games would be a hit. My Two Gils

Night of the Haunted Backlog

Halloween night has passed. Gone are the malevolent spirits, exhausted from their visit to the ephemeral playground the Living World opens for them. Or are they?

While October 31st lurks in our past, not all doors to the other world are closed, for wherever shadow exists, evil awaits, ready to invade. It might be November, but are you retrogamers really safe?

Game Overkill

Game Overkill – Doom

If you follow me on Twitter and were paying attention (by following #GameOverkill), you might have noticed that as I started playing Doom, I slowly came to the realization that this game I thought I loved for two decades… yeah, I had never played it. Turns out I had it confused with Doom II all this time. I even had the original on my personal list of games everyone should play at least once, but not its sequel. Also, I played the DOS version via DOSBox. I also used the Doomsday Engine, which allowed me to play an enhanced port while easily configuring the controls. I should’ve played the PS1 version as well, since it was listed, but I wasn’t able to. I hear it’s good.

N64 Trick or Treat 2- The Treatening

Two years ago, I went trick or treating, N64 style. That trip admittedly was more trick than treat. Two years have gone by, though, and there has been much connoisseuring since then. Surely, if I were to try this again, it would turn out better for me, right? RIGHT? Well, we’re gonna find out. I took the entire North American Nintendo 64 game library and threw it into a randomizer. What follows is the first five games from the list, presented as the story of my trick or treating experience.  Read More

Ghouls ‘N Ghosts

Forget goblins.

Goblins are for THE WEAK.

Sure Ghosts ‘N Goblins was a fun game and it kick-started a really popular franchise but those goblins had to go. 1988 was the year of the ghoul and yes, I’m basing that statement solely on the game I’m going to talk about today.

Ghouls ‘N Ghosts was the first sequel to Ghosts ‘N Goblins and although it was released in the Arcade and on a variety of other ports, I’ll be focusing on the Sega Master System version because we all know how sloppy and, by extension, amusing those Arcade conversions can be on that console.

Shia LaBeouf creates meta-modernist love art exhibit based on IGN

by Cece Romano

Shia

Last week, Shia LaBeouf, famed actor, artist, and paper-bag wearer, opened a new meta-modernist art exhibit. A follow-up to his exhibit #IAMSORRY, the newly titled @IGN consists of LeBeouf sobbing loudly and rolling in a pile of money naked in a small room as people enter. The entrants are them allowed to take an item off a table (a bag of Doritos, a bottle of Mountain Dew, and a copy of the latest Call of Duty) and physically assault LaBeouf with it.
