We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story

Back in 1993, dinosaurs were all the rage: Jurassic Park was out in cinemas and so was…

We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story, which was, oddly enough, also produced by Steven Spielberg.

Of course, it being a kids’ movie in the 90’s, the film spawned a few video games. Even if the film itself was a major box-office bomb and flopped rather hard.

Let’s take a quick look at the different We’re Back! games and try to find at least one decent 8-bit or 16-bit adaptation.

Top 10 Evil Doppelgangers

It’s common in video games and especially Nintendo games for the protagonist to fight against an evil version of him or herself. I like to call this individual the evil doppelganger. Sometimes this evil copy of the protagonist is a clone, a robot, a figment of his mind, or sometimes it’s something even more sinister. Nevertheless, it represents the protagonist’s evil side, a side that must be defeated in order to save the world.

So today I decided to count down my top 10 favorite evil doppelgangers in games. Most of the characters on this list are from retro games, and only one character per franchise.

Shuwatch

こんにちは everyone! I’m doing something a bit different today, I’m going to show you some game related import toys I have  in my collection.  Today I’m showing off the Shuwatch!  You’re probably thinking, what’s a shuwatch?? It’s a shooting watch silly :p  It’s actually a lot cooler than it sounds.  It was developed by Hudson Soft (notice the bee logo) for kids (well, boys) to help increase their shooting speed for games like Star Force on the Famicom.  It counts the number of button presses in 10 seconds.  The inspiration was Takahashi Meijin (aka the guy in the Adventure Island games) who was called Meijin because he was a master.  He is able to hit the button 16 times in one second, so his score on this would be 160! I’m already having problems beating my friend Josiah’s score of 129!

F-Zero

When last we met, I sang the praises of Super Mario Kart. Another SNES racing game I’ve always wanted to play was F-Zero. All I really know of it is what I have been taught by Super Smash Bros. and I have only played the N64 sequel a couple of times. I do know that it was an SNES launch title and that there had been one on every Nintendo console until the Wii unless, of course, you count the Virtual Console where I played it. But you didn’t come here for trivia, did you? No, you didn’t. It’s cool. I know you just want me for my reviews.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus

And now for something completely different…

Monty Python’s Flying Circus: The Computer Game.

Yup, that’s a thing that exists.

And, with Terry Gilliam’s new movie The Zero Theorem out in theatres just last week, what better time to explore this mad creation than right now?

GMZ #11 – Link’s Album, Vince Zampella Interview, & Pensacon Report

[Author Note: Many may react with disdain toward our (and by that, we totally mean Daniel’s) method of covering Pensacon. We understand that we may look rather silly, or worse, disrespectful toward honest convention goers and participants in of an honest and good event like Pensacon, but in reality, we were just trying to have some fun with our job, and also trying to goof around with some of the attendees, and maybe try to make them laugh a little.

We sincerely (and, unlike most of the time when we say that word, we do actually mean it this time) apologize if our presence at the convention bothered any of the other con-goers (we don’t actually know if anyone is upset, but we figured it wouldn’t be far-fetched). As well, we’d like to thank Pensacon for so graciously granting us Media Badges to attend their convention, and we would love to be able to come back next year (and apparently we aren’t the only ones, as Pensacon’s press release states “98% of the attendees interviewed said they planned to return.” Well done!).

So, in conclusion, thank you Staff of Pensacon, Pensacon Attendees and Guests, and anybody in the larger Pensacola area, for tolerating our crap.]

1 More Castle – no more beta!

1 More Castle was launched on May 28th, 2012 along with our bannered WordPress theme, proudly emblazoned with the hip online badge of honour: “beta”. While this didn’t start off as a point of ironic humor, as the months dragged on with no updates to the theme, I started to feel the unfulfilled promise of  “beta” weighing down on me.

SNES-CD Documentation

Originally planned for a 1994 release, the SNES CD-ROM started its life as a partnership project with Sony. However, due to licencing disagreements, Nintendo dropped the partnership and turned to Sony’s rival, Phillips. Alas, unfortunately for Nintendo, the only thing that came of it was Sony’s eventual entrance into the console market.
