Socket

Do you like speed? No, not the drug; as in, going fast? Like, super fast! Blast processing fast even! Speeding along grassy fields, zooming through loop de loops while collecting things and taking out robot baddies along the way? If all this sounds fun to you then boy do I have the game for you! No, I’m not talking about that blue Hedgehog, I’m talking about Socket! The greatest time traveling robot duck thing in all the land! Okay, maybe that’s going a bit too far but in all seriousness I’m not entirely sure what the heck Socket is. Maybe he’s a cyborg duck? Well whatever he is, his game is one of the most blatant rip offs of Sonic the Hedgehog ever and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

3rd Party N64 Controllers on Parade

A lot of people to this day bemoan the N64 controller. They sound very similar to this: “Wahhhhhhhhhhhh! Something was different than the norm and it frightened me. WAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!” Truth be told though, while not perfect, the N64 controller really changed things for the gaming world. Many of the concepts from that controller went on to be repurposed and improved upon in the consoles that have come around since then. Recently, though, I was reminded that even back then, people must have been whining about the controller albeit much more quietly without the internet because there was a host of 3rd party N64 controllers on the market. Most of them were either mutated versions of the stock controller, or totally unusable knock offs. This week, I thought it might be fun to reflect on the 3rd party mayhem.

Forget Everything You Know About Retro Consoles

This week on Storming the Castle, we decided to tackle the age old question: What makes a video game console “Retro”? This question has been tackled before by many, but rather than give you a one sided perspective from a single person, we opted to give you three independent perspectives which may or may not coexist in the same macrocosm.

Top 10 WORST Celebrity-Endorsed Video Games

The Super Bowl was last Sunday, and that means it was a time for consumption of greasy foods, watching grown men brutally attack one another, and rampant commercialism. I was thinking of a blog to go along with the big game, but I already talked a lot about sportsball. So when I saw Peyton Manning in another commercial, I was struck by inspiration.

Now celebrities endorse many products, and some celebrities even get their own video games. I’m not talking about video games based off movies or TV shows (Tool Time, The Fifth Element, Last Action Hero), but instead retro video games (Playstation 1 era and prior) with celebrity endorsement. Most of these celebrity-endorsed games are just terrible, so I decided to count down the top 10 worst.

Frustrated PeTA Decides to Lash Out at the Past

By Anne Neemal

Did you hear about PeTA’s new game? Yeah, didn’t think so, but you might be interested.

It appears PeTA thinks they have a problem staying relevant and in gamers’ faces. Not enough new games that treat animals unethically are being made for PeTA to stay in the headlines. Luckily, they seem to have found a perfect solution: looking to the past. So, that’s where they went, way back to the past, and their first target is Joust, since it is apparently unethical to use some bizarre form of giant, flying emus/ostriches in arena-style battle-to-the-death joust matches.

It Came From Japan: Go Go Ackman

こんにちは For today’s entry of It Came From Japan I am going to share a very special Super Famicom game, as it was recommended to me by JewWario who passed away suddenly last week.  Today I am just going to talk about the first game in the series, but if this game interests you at all you should definitely check out all 3 games in the series which all came out for the Super Famicom.

“Adventure” for the Atari 2600: The Skyrim of its Day

What’s this you say? An Atari 2600 game? Featured as a Completist column? Strange to be sure… However, since the chances of me writing an article on an Atari 2600 game are close to zero, I found it appropriate to bring in my friend Rizzard Core (his real name is Rich, shhhhhhhh) to do the job for me. I’m just feeling a bit lazy this week, what can I say?

Beetlejuice

Being a huge fan of the film Beetlejuice ever since I saw it as a kid, my search for a good game based on the movie began early.

Over time, I played three of those games, two of which were more based on the cartoon series than the film itself. You had the DOS game Adventures Of Beetlejuice: Skeletons In The Closet which was pretty playable but which, ultimately, was nothing more than a puzzle game, albeit a well made one.

Then LJN graced us with an infamous NES outing which, for some reason, steered clear from the classic music theme, thereby starting things off with disappointment.  Even if that house is shown to us early on, promising us similarities with the movie:

House Beetlejuice NES

Not sure the afterlife has a sign but I’ll let that slide.

GMZ – Breaking News – Nintendo Fusion

By now, I’m sure you’ve all heard about Nintendo’s next gen console, which will be called the Nintendo Fusion (or NFusion for short). It was all over the news sites last week, but very little information was given other than the name. Well, we here at GMZ managed to get our hands on what Nintendo told us is “only a prototype” version of the console and we’re here to tell you everything you need to know.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Part 2

It seems like forever ago when I wrote part 1 of this review. I have been itching, chomping at the bit, if you will to bring you this next part. The thing that greatly surprised me about part 1 was your reactions. My desire in this review has been to convey to you what I felt as I experienced this game and your comments, Tweets, and messages indicate that I succeeded. The thing that surprised me the most was that you didn’t care if I ran long on the review. Since that is true, I will complete the review, no matter how long, with part 2. Since it has been a little while since part 1 of this review, I will begin this review with the last paragraph of part 1.

Felix The Cat

Here’s a game I’ve been meaning to talk about for a while.

Felix The Cat was, of course, an old cartoon series and I was a big fan of it as a kid. Which is why I was amazed to find that, not only were there games based on the cartoon, but they were really good!

I’ll be talking about the NES port of the game today and no, I won’t mention that godawful movie they made based on the cartoon because it doesn’t exist.

That’s what I keep telling myself, anyway…

The game is a typical platformer which sees you play as the titular cat who walks around Mario-like settings using his trusty magic bag to foil the Professor’s plans. Come to think of it, this is starting to sound a bit like Sonic The Hedgehog as well.

I guess if you’re going to be derivative, might as well follow the good stuff!

Top 10 Run ‘N Gun Games

After writing a list about babies last time, my mind was blank. I had a bunch of ideas in my head, but no strong feeling about which list I wanted to do next. I left it up to my Twitter followers by posting a poll. The results were a tie between Top 10 Licensed Games that Wasted Their Potential (which will be done eventually) and Top 10 Run ‘N Gun games which I’m doing today. I thought this would be the easier list, but I was wrong.
